You need a quick chocolate fix? This single serving cake bakes in the microwave in minutes, delivering a gooey, moist texture that avoids the spongy results of other mug cake recipes. This is the perfect instant dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 Tablespoons milk (any kind)
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon chocolate chips (optional, for extra gooeyness)

Instructions

  1. Find a standard, microwave-safe mug (about 10-12 ounces).
  2. Add the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt directly into the mug. Use a small fork to mix these dry ingredients thoroughly.
  3. Pour in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.
  4. Stir the wet and dry ingredients together until just combined. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are fine.
  5. If using, stir in the chocolate chips or drop them on top.
  6. Place the mug in the microwave. Cook on high power for 60 to 90 seconds. Start checking at 60 seconds. The cake is done when the top looks set but still slightly soft in the center.
  7. Let the mug cake cool for one minute before eating directly from the mug.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use buttermilk instead of regular milk.
  • If your microwave is very powerful, you may need to reduce the cooking time to 50 seconds to prevent drying out.
  • This recipe makes one dessert for one serving.
  • Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top immediately after microwaving for a decadent experience.
