Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (14.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 3 cups cold milk
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 (7 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) package pound cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 cup store-bought caramel sauce
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional, for crunch)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pudding: In a large bowl, whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix and cold milk for two minutes until slightly thickened. Set aside.
  2. Make the cheesecake layer: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Gently fold half of the thawed whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture.
  3. Prepare the apples: In a small bowl, gently stir the apple pie filling with the cinnamon and nutmeg. This adds extra spice to your tender apples.
  4. Assemble the first layer: In a large glass trifle bowl, arrange half of the pound cake cubes to cover the bottom. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce evenly over the cake layer.
  5. Create the second layer: Spread half of the cheesecake mixture over the caramel layer. Top the cheesecake with half of the spiced apple mixture.
  6. Build the middle: Spoon half of the prepared vanilla pudding over the apples. Sprinkle with half of the chopped pecans, if using.
  7. Repeat layers: Add the remaining pound cake cubes, drizzle with the remaining caramel sauce, and top with the remaining cheesecake mixture, spiced apples, and vanilla pudding.
  8. Finish the trifle: Top the entire trifle with the remaining whipped topping. Chill the trifle for at least four hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the layers to set.
  9. Serve: Before serving your showstopping apple dessert, drizzle a little extra caramel sauce over the top layer for presentation.

Notes

  • You can make this make ahead holiday dessert up to one day in advance. Keep it covered in the refrigerator.
  • For a homemade touch, substitute the instant pudding with homemade spiced apple pudding.
  • If you prefer a crunchier texture, toast the pecans lightly before chopping and adding them to the layers.
