You can make this savory shrimp toast in your oven for a crispy, lighter alternative to the fried version. This easy shrimp toast recipe is perfect for parties or a quick snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped scallions (green parts only)
  • 1 large egg white
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 12 slices white bread or sandwich bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp spread: Place the shrimp, softened cream cheese, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, white pepper, scallions, egg white, and cornstarch into a food processor. Pulse until the mixture forms a relatively smooth paste. Do not over-process; you want some texture remaining.
  2. Prepare the bread: Trim the crusts from the bread slices. Cut each slice in half diagonally to form triangles.
  3. Assemble the toast: Spread a generous, even layer of the shrimp mixture onto one side of each bread triangle.
  4. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Arrange the shrimp-topped bread triangles on the prepared baking sheet, shrimp-side up.
  6. Brush the edges of the bread lightly with melted butter. Sprinkle the tops of the shrimp mixture with sesame seeds, if using.
  7. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the shrimp topping is firm and the bread edges are golden brown and crispy. For extra crispiness, you can briefly place them under the broiler for 1-2 minutes at the end, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • For an authentic Vietnamese Shrimp Toast flavor, add 1 teaspoon of fish sauce to the shrimp mixture.
  • Serve this flavorful shrimp bites immediately with sweet chili sauce or a simple mixture of soy sauce and rice vinegar for dipping.
  • If you prefer a very smooth texture, you can finely mince the shrimp by hand instead of using a food processor.
